A Study Day
“Vakhtangov showed us that everything can be brought together… very beautiful, very wonderful, very deep and very light …” (Michael Chekhov)
Saturday 10th May, 10.00 to 16.00
at
The Barn Theatre
Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance,
Lamorbey Park, Sidcup, DA15 9DF.
Yevgeny Vakhtangov (1883 – 1922) is the first and arguably the only director in the history of the theatre to have achieved a practical synthesis of the methodologies of the two revolutionary masters of the Russian school of acting – Stanislavski and Meyerhold. He called this synthesis “fantastic realism” and considered it to be the most artistically valid way of creating theatre.
Andrei Malaev-Babel is an actor, director and scholar, a graduate of the Vakhtangov Theatre Institute in Moscow. He is Associate Professor of Theatre at the Florida State University/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training, and a member of the board of the Michael Chekhov Association. His major book, Yevgeny Vakhtangov: A Critical Portrait, was published by Routledge in 2012, and he is the editor of The Vakhtangov Sourcebook (Routledge, 2011).
